Ravi Kumar didn’t muster up something fresh for the audience and appears like a throwback to several intensifying action dramas of the 90s. He is effortlessly pleasing and infuses his portions with the right part of vulnerability, composure and strength, delivering a performance that is nothing short of perfect. Unlike some of his recent outings like Lion and Paisa Vasool which shows him in overblown roles, Balakrishna arrives with a restrained performance in a film that is loaded with chilling action sequences, entertainment, and heart-wrenching emotions. Ten minutes through the second hour, too much of melodrama further slacken the film’s pace. The story begins to unfold from the pre-interval episode and goes on a predictable note. He extracts the strong performance not only from Balakrishna but also from the supporting roles like LB Sriram, Prabhakar and Murali Mohan. The director handles this hour competently with some feel-good moments in the territory that seems quite familiar to us. The best part is the actor’s discourse about the priests and the slokas highlighting the essential practices they do in pursuance of a faith. The first hour of Jai Simha is entertaining with Balakrishna in his elements.

He lands in Kumbakonam, earns a living as a driver to the village temple’s trustee - played by Murali Mohan. The film introduces Balakrishna as Narasimha, who has a dubious past and leads a nomadic life with his one-year-old son. This time too, his actioner Jai Simha directed by KS Ravi Kumar presents him in a role that suits him the best and how his fans would like to see him. Time and again, the 57-year-old actor proved that the festive season works for him and his fans. And if his film is slotted for Sankranti, it creates tremendous fanfare. On the whole Jai Simha is a tried and tested commercial entertainer, which banks on Balayya’s screen presence but doesn’t entertain you as intended.Balakrishna is, without doubt, the darling of the masses. The re-recording gives the required mush to the heroic flamboyant, over the top action scenes. Murali Mohan eases through his role while the villains are the loud ones that we are used to.Īmong Chirantan Bhatt’s songs, the Anaganaga track has been used well while the two duet songs seem unwarranted. Other heroines hardly have any scope in the movie. Nayanthara looks ravishing in the second half and the song sequences. Apart from his free-flowing, effortless dialogue delivery and his fearless attitude, Balakrishna lightens the occasion with some fun dance moves. Apart from his heroic gait and flourish, he also impresses in the scenes where he tries to be a loving father. There are two distinct looks for Balakrishna and the bearded look, in particular, suits him very well for his age. A couple of comedies here and there and the pre-interval fight scene are probably the saving grace, but still there isn’t any special scene that will stay in mind. The lengthy running time only turns out to be a penalty to an already lacklustre affair.

It is so predictable and hardly excites you at any point of time. There is a small twist before the intermission, which might take you by surprise, but apart from that, Jai Simha travels on a familiar terrain. Why does he have to make a sacrifice? What happened between Narasimha and his girlfriend and what was he in the past, make up for the second half. Narasimha gets into a tussle with a police officer who turns out to be the husband of his ex-girlfriend. But by now, you obviously know that he has a heroic past and had to sacrifice his livelihood for a reason.

After a spate of movies in which he played the stylish, sophisticated hero, Balakrishna plays the typically brave rugged son of the soil in Jai Simha, directed by commercially proven experienced filmmaker KS Ravikumar.ĭirector KS Ravikumar has ensured that the movie is not just a showcase of Balayya’s action and heroism, but also a good cocktail of mindless comedy and sentiment in good measure.
